zakāt is an Arabic term meaning “giving to charity” or “giving to the needy.” It is a mandatory form of almsgiving in Islam, representing one of the Five Pillars of the faith, where Muslims are required to donate a portion of their wealth, typically 2.5%, to help those in need.
